KOCHI: There have been stand-up jokes on Trump, Modi, Indians, religion and politics. But never on cricket or its million or so die-hard fans. Standup comedians Rohit Swain and Hriday Ranjan who bonded over a cup of coffee and cricket are bringing India’s first cricket themed comedy show to Kochi.
In Bangalore, Vizag and Chennai where they had previously performed, the duo was a hit. “I don’t know. Every time we met, we would sit for hours and talk endlessly about cricket. We saw humour in many situations that happened in the field of cricket. So, it never surprised us when we wanted to take those jokes onto the stage”, says Rohit.
Right from making a dig at the IPL teams or making a joke about annoyed wives who were fed up with their cricket-crazed husbands, the Hyderabad-based duo, kept improvising on their jokes almost every time.
“Cricket is a divided topic. There are die-hard fans and those who hate cricket just because their partners love it so much. We had to ensure the jokes appealed to both the sides,” adds Hriday.
Apart from the standup comedy, they also include parody, songs and an interactive game so that the audience have a great time.
Rohit had a stammer when he was in school. “I was always the last one who wanted to speak on stage. My friends and teachers are astonished I traversed this path,” he said. Despite this, Rohit was always considered funny by his friends and family. “One guy said he would pay to hear me crack a joke. This is when I decided that I would make it my living,” he says.
However, the path that led to standup comedy was not exactly an easy one. “Almost every standup comedian starts off in the same way. They are overconfident about their ability to crack jokes. They are so sure they can make the audience crack up. This is how I started too. But, on stage, I realised immediately that the reality was different. Nobody laughed when I cracked my first joke. Nor the second. I went home dejected, but I took some very good tutorials from professional standup artists. Since then, after learning the trick of the trade, there was no looking back,” says Rohit.
Meanwhile, Hriday was one who wanted to write to make a living. His humour blog ‘Heart Ranjan’ had a huge fan following. When standup comedy became more popular than humour blogs, the comedian within him decided to quit the blogs and start doing standup comedies.
The duo will perform at Olive DownTown, Kadavanthara in Kochi on Saturday, 7.30 pm
